Abstract

The construction industry is one of the largest contributors to global environmental degradation, accounting for substantial greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, and waste generation. As climate change accelerates and urbanization expands, there is an urgent need to adopt sustainable construction practices that minimize environmental impact while ensuring structural efficiency and economic feasibility. This study explores the integration of eco-friendly materials, advanced construction techniques, and smart technologies within the sustainable construction paradigm. A mixed-method approach was employed to assess the performance of low-carbon materials such as bamboo and hempcrete, along with construction strategies including 3D printing, modular building, and prefabrication. The role of smart technologies, renewable energy systems, and water conservation techniques was also analyzed to evaluate their effectiveness in improving building performance and reducing operational costs. The results indicate that sustainable materials substantially reduce carbon emissions and enhance thermal efficiency, while modular and prefabricated techniques decrease construction time and on-site waste by over 40%. Integration of renewable energy systems and smart building controls yielded energy savings exceeding 30%, with greywater recycling systems contributing to significant reductions in water usage. The findings emphasize that sustainable construction not only delivers environmental benefits but also leads to long-term economic savings and improved building resilience. However, challenges such as high initial investment, limited regulatory support, and workforce skill gaps must be addressed to facilitate widespread adoption. The study concludes that a multi-faceted strategy—combining innovation, policy reform, and stakeholder collaboration—is essential for advancing sustainable construction and achieving global climate and development goals.
