MINIMIZING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IN CONSTRUCTION: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AND SOLUTIONS
Keywords:

The construction industry is a major contributor to global environmental degradation due to its extensive consumption of energy, raw materials, and generation of waste. As climate change intensifies and resource scarcity becomes a growing concern, the need for sustainable construction practices has become imperative for reducing ecological impact and promoting long-term resilience. This study presents a comprehensive review of sustainable construction approaches, focusing on eco-friendly building materials, energy-efficient techniques, and technological innovations such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and renewable energy integration. Case studies from Pakistan and globally were examined to evaluate real-world applications of green construction strategies. A quantitative framework was used to assess reductions in energy usage, carbon emissions, and resource waste. The findings indicate significant environmental benefits associated with sustainable construction. Green buildings demonstrated a notable reduction in energy consumption and carbon footprint, with the use of materials like recycled steel, low-carbon concrete, and bamboo showing improved lifecycle performance. Additionally, the adoption of BIM and modular construction led to substantial reductions in waste and enhanced project efficiency. Renewable technologies such as solar and geothermal systems further contributed to lowering operational costs and improving sustainability metrics.Despite the promising outcomes, challenges remain in terms of high initial costs, lack of awareness, and limited policy support, particularly in developing regions. The study concludes that overcoming these barriers will require a multidimensional strategy, including regulatory reforms, financial incentives, and professional training programs. By integrating sustainable materials, technologies, and design principles, the construction sector can transition toward environmentally responsible practices that align with global sustainability objectives and create long-term socio-economic value.
